NBA Writer Connects Former Nugget Russell Westbrook to Eastern Conference Contender

The Denver Nuggets have reshaped their roster this offseason, and it appears that Russell Westbrook will not be part of their future plans.
Westbrook signed with Denver on a veteran minimum deal for the 2024-25 season, averaging 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.4 steals in nearly 28 minutes per game across 75 appearances. Despite his contributions, the Nuggets were eliminated by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals. Following that exit, the 2017 MVP declined his player option for the 2025-26 season, making it likely he’ll join his fourth team in as many years.
At 37, the NBA’s all-time leader in triple-doubles may be nearing the twilight of his career, but his pursuit of an elusive championship continues.
Westbrook Linked to the Knicks
According to Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report, one team that could make sense for Westbrook is the New York Knicks.
“The Knicks already bolstered their backcourt depth with Jordan Clarkson, but they reportedly showed interest in Westbrook back in July,” Bailey noted. “He could still add playmaking, particularly in lineups featuring shooters like Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, and OG Anunoby. Westbrook’s ability to attack the rim would fit well with that group.”
If signed, Westbrook would likely slot into a reduced role behind Clarkson and Miles McBride, running the second unit while still chasing the first championship of his storied career.
A Potential Fit in New York
The Knicks, fresh off an Eastern Conference Finals loss to the Indiana Pacers, are expected to remain among the East’s top contenders. Adding a veteran playmaker like Westbrook could give them an additional floor general when Jalen Brunson sits, while also complementing their arsenal of perimeter shooters.
New York has also been linked to Landry Shamet and Ben Simmons, but Westbrook remains a name to watch as the regular season draws closer.
